Wedding Quilt for cousins Dan and Anne Marie Rovere

I worked with Dan and Anne Marie on creating a wedding quilt they wanted! We started with my usual process of looking at quilt images online.  They wanted blue and purple, they liked a lighter center, and when we found a quilt image, they liked everything about it. Luckily, its available online as a tutorial video from 3 Dudes Quilting, so I watched that a few times, then dug in.

I purchased some beautiful batiks while on a sewing trip to Annapolis, MD with some pals,

then I learned this interesting technique for making this quilt, which includes, creating strata, cutting squares, layering those squares right sides together and sewing all around the block,  cutting on both diagonals and opening up to these fun blocks.

Once the quilt top was all put together, I created the back this the leftovers and some other fabric from my "collection":  

Then I did something I had been wanting to learn, I went with pal Kimberly to a quilt shop in Burlington NJ to learn how to use their big Long Arm quilting machines.  After a long lesson, we made reservations on the machines for our own projects, and I was able to get this big quilt ALL quilted in one afternoon!

Sam and Kelly's Wedding

My son Sam proposed to the fabulous Kelly in a London park the summer of 2015 (and got some unsuspecting strangers to snap photos and video of the moment!)  Lucky for us we have these great photos.  My daughter Anna did some photo color manipulation, and so I had the image on the right as a starting point.  I sent that off to be printed on fabric at Spoonflower.

I added some pieced fabric inserts, and the pop of red (on the advice of my friend Kim) which then became a heart:

I started some all over embroidery, and after a couple of false starts decided this would be covered all over with sunflowers, because Kelly loves sunflowers!

I did this bit of detail on Kelly's bag and then outlined the heart :

My daughter convinced me to frame this, rather than create a soft art quilt, and I think she's right. 

Mazel Tov Sam and Kelly !  To many many many years of happiness for my darling son and his wonderful wife.

Aaron and Sarah's Wedding Quilt

Our cousins Aaron and Sarah were married in 2015.  They enjoy watching Doctor Who together, so I decided to surprise them with this themed quilt:

The center image was made using a pattern by Hunter's Design Studio - Relatively Dimensional.  The border includes some Doctor Who fabric from Spoonflower, and then some special embroidered bits. 

One corner has this image:    Which translates to "Aaron and Sarah" in Gallifreyan, the language of Doctor Who.    I used an online translator to generate the image, then I embroidered it.  

Another corner includes Aaron and Sarah's names, and also a famous saying from Doctor Who:  "a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff"

The back includes rows of left over blocks and fabric.

  Here we are unveiling the quilt top - it took me a few extra months to finish the quilting.

I've long been connected with "little" cousin Aaron.  He was a very smart little boy, very interested in math and science concepts, and I always enjoyed interacting with him at family reunions.  As young adult we talked about programming, because I was also a programmer.  (He has since far surpassed my math, science and programming knowledge!)

Now as a grown up man, he found a likewise very smart and wonderful woman to love.  Sarah is sweet and warm with my cousin Aaron, she's a great addition to our extended family and I adore them both.

Roland and Sebastien's Wedding Quilt

Just before they were married, I was checking in with Roland about a wedding registry, when I asked, "Instead of selecting something from your registry, what I would really like to do is make you guys a quilt.  How do you feel about that?"  Roland responded, "I didn't dare ask!  But we would love that!" 

So began the wedding quilt journey, in which we looked at pictures online,  decided on quilt colors, then shopped for fabric together.   This quilt took a very long time to complete, because of the quilting, but I had until their 1st anniversary, right? 

 

The pattern is a double disappearing nine-patch, designed by Kim Lapacek. 

It is quilted all over with "I love you" in various languages, because Roland works with people from all over the world, and Sebastien is from France.

I finished it up just before our move to NYC, in January 2015.  Since then, R&S have also moved, and I wish them well in their new adventure.
